Crampons

All SALEWA crampons are made of 42CrMo4 steel. This material combines high tensile strength and elasticity, and is thus ideal for use in crampon production. The steel is cut hydraulically, in order to achieve the cleanest possible cut. In this way the formation of hairline cracks is prevented, which could otherwise arise when bending the frame and the tips. With the stamping of the frame, rigidity is increased, without the crampon gaining weight. Finally all parts are hardened and tempered.
SALEWA processes the steel on by “aging”. This method guarantees both surface hardness and lasting elasticity. Indentations to the side under load return to their starting position. So the material is hard on the outside (approximately 46-48 Rockwell C) and “soft” in its core, so that it has the required elasticity, preventing breaks or permanent distortions. The electrostatic powder coating protects the parts from corrosion and enables the crampon to be given colour.

Crampon Tipps

Mountaineering, climbing, ice climbing or high touring all involve a risk of injury and in extreme cases death. The right equipment and its correct use reduce that risk, preventing injuries. So check every time before you use it that a product is undamaged and that all the parts function without problem. If there is any doubt as to the safety of a product then it should not be used and a specialist should have a look at it.

Care, storage and lifespan:

This product should be cleaned and cared for as follows, so that it functions properly on a lasting basis:

1.       Cleaning: When it is dirty only wash it with a neutral cleaning substance and clean water (maximum 20°). Leave to dry at room temperature.

2.       Care: Inspect the crampon for cracks and wear to cables and belt; oil metal parts and joint lightly.

3.       Storage: After cleaning, store unpacked in a dry, cool room that is not too light. Do not allow the crampon to come into contact with chemicals, moisture, strong heat, sharp objects or intensive UV rays!

4.       Lifespan: This very much depends upon the type of care and the frequency of use. With normal care and use one can count on approximately five years, but with intensive use three years. In order to keep it functioning properly for as long as possible, the following should be avoided: improper use, falling from a great height, contact with chemicals and severe heat (in a car parked in the sun!). If the prongs are sharpened several times this will shorten them. The minimum prong length is 20 mm. Warning: never sharpen the prongs with a grinding wheel, but only with a file! Only file side prongs front and back, and in no case laterally; only file the front prongs above and at the tip!
