Top or flop?
The best way of finding out if a product really does work is to try it out for yourself. Failing this, another way of avoiding bad buys is to read the opinions of others who have tested the product. This includes the opinions of trade journalists who have vast experience of testing such products. SALEWA isn’t the least bit afraid of such reviews and allows its products to be regularly tested by independent media.

We are happy to show you what different European journalists have to say about our products, as your satisfaction is our primary aim.
Ropesack

Excellent test result for SALEWA ROPE CARRIER

“Simply contains all the features that a climbing backpack could contain.” This was the excellent test result for the ROPE CARRIER in the July/August issue of Climb! magazine. The tester was also impressed by the speed at which the backpack can be converted into a bag.

SALEWA PEUTEREY with optimum ventilation

The PEUTERY high altitude rucksack was given a very positive write-up in the August edition of Bergsteiger. The article emphasised the good ventilation properties, but the bag’s light weight and ergonomic waist harness were also given favourable mentions.

Bergsteiger recommends SALEWA ORYX

The July issue of Bergsteiger magazine gave the SALEWA Oryx mountaineering pants its “consumer tip” recommendation for versatility. The editorial team concluded: “Highly breathable, light, zip-off pants for warm to hot days. No need to remove shoes to zip them off. The pants also offer long-lasting water resistance.

Hamburger Abendblatt praises SALEWA tents

To coincide with the start of the camping season in July the Hamburger Abendblatt published an article on the top ten tents on the market. SALEWA won first place for the Equador lll. The editorial team concluded: “Spacious and colourful”. Not alone that, but SALEWA tents also carried off the prizes for second, third and sixth places for the SIERRA LEONE Ultra (“a light, timeless favourite“), CORONA IV (“large family dome tent“) and OMEGA BASE III (“airy with a large vestibule“).

SIERRA LEONE – comfortable living space and the best protection from the weather

The SALEWA SIERRA LEONE tent tested “very good” in the August edition of Outdoor magazine. This SALEWA top seller gained a lot of points for its weather-proof properties – “ground  and fly sheet keep everything out”, and comfort – “lots of space for two people”. The editorial team concluded: “…..a very good all-round trekking tent for a really cracking price.”

Uragano Jacket „Good"

Jackets with zip-off sleeves were the subject of the latest product test carried out by the magazine "Trekkingbike" (May/June 2006). Eight jackets took part in the test. The criteria on which the test was based were weight, cut/fit, manufacture/quality and value for money. The SALEWA Uragano Jacket was considered "good". The editorial team concluded as follows "light, very tightly woven fleece material, wind-resistant, breathable, very comfortable and soft to the touch. The casual cut makes the jacket versatile for any number of outdoor activities. Can also be worn as a warm second layer".

Award for SALEWA’S Velvet Bay

Once a year the textiles manufacturer Malden Mills confers the Polartec Apex Award on the most innovative products made from Polartec materials. The basis for the award is design, function, innovation and fit. The jury chose the SALEWA Velvet Bay TP Lady Jacket with the comment "By using the Polartec material Wind Pro Highloft, SALEWA has created a jacket with a high "softness factor" and with equally impressive functional characteristics. It is wind resistant, breathable and has thermal properties. Side panels made from Polartec Wind Pro with Hardface technology guarantee freedom of movement and robustness. Water-resistant zips enhance the function of the jacket.

Professional Tip for Survey GTX Jacket

The SALEWA GTX Survey Jacket received a very good test result from the German magazine “Tours” under the heading “Tested on Tour” (January/February edition). It was given the “Professional Tip”. Tester’s conclusion: “The GTX Survey Jacket is very convincing from a technical and colour perspective. A jacket that can take its place at the top of expreme mountain sports.

Sceptre Soft Shell Glove "excellent"

The German magazine “Bergsteiger” (January edition 2006) gives the SALEWA Sceptre Soft Shell Glove three stars (= excellent) for function and design in the section entitled “tested for you”: “Well thought out and robust finger gloves for winter; warm and breathable. Indestructible, good for ice climbing, finger tips well formed and robust. They keep you warm even when wet”.

Test evaluation „good“ for Arco Jacket

Austria’s test magazine “Konsument”, the Swiss consumer magazines “Saldo” and “Spendere Meglio” have put soft shell jackets to the test. Altogether 13 soft shell jackets with a membrane were tried out. The SALEWA Arco jacket received an above average evaluation. Of the 13 jackets tested, the Arco WS jacket received the caption “good” and was placed third with the same number of points as the runner up. The test criteria were function, durability and comfort.

Stiftung Warentest: Good result for Arco Jacket!

The German Stiftung Warentest - the most renowned test institute in the German speaking countries - tested Softshell jackets and the SALEWA Arco WS Jacket was considered to be good (2,0): "Very good function. Durable Unisex-Jacket with Gore-Windstopper-membrane.

The magazine “klettern” recommended the SALEWA Krypton helmet

In its October edition the German magazine “klettern” has the SALEWA Krypton helmet as one of its recommendations. The editors’ verdict: “This, the most technically complex of the helmets, is very comfortable to wear, and the adjustment possibilities are very good. The two-layer "Twin-Shell" construction (the only helmet with Inmould technology) and the large ventilation slits ensure the circulation of air. Certified for seven different sport types: very comfortable to wear, good ventilation; wide area of application.”

Krypton
Very good test result for Micra Base and Omega Base 2

The German magazine “Motorrad” has judged the SALEWA Micra Base and Omega Base 2 tents to be “Very good” (September 2005 edition). The test verdict: "Great three-season tents for a reasonable price that are suitable for trekking, canoeing and especially motorbike holidays. Not just for one night!"

Sierra Leone tipped

The German magazine "Trekking-bike" has made the SALEWA classic Sierra Leone tent one of its tips. A total of six tents by different manufacturers were tested and the Sierra Lone impressed the testers as a “straightforward tent with lots of room for two.” Their verdict: "A well thought-out and well equipped tent for price-conscious long-term travellers or weekend escapists who appreciate a bit of comfort."

Peuterey is a hit

The Peuterey 50+15 rucksack has been awarded “price tip” status by the magazine "Tours" (4/2005): “This is a rucksack that impresses on first sight. It impresses even further, however, when used to master difficult terrain. It fits comfortably on the hips, without superfluous padding interfering with mobility in difficult crevices. The Peuterey fits perfectly on the back and is above all dry, as optimal back ventilation is provided by SALEWA’s Airmat supporting system which is integrated into the body contact supporting system. The lid and sleeping bag compartment are particularly robust and waterproof. Verdict: This rucksack proved an immediate hit with everybody."

"Cycling tour" tip for travelling pants

The German magazine "Radtouren" (August 2005 edition) has awarded their value-for-money tip to the Traveller Dry 3/1 travel pants: “An all-round sound product. The Dry'ton material dries quickly and sufficiently.”

Test: excellent results for Avenger

The German magazine "outdoor" has given an "excellent" rating to the Avenger II tent. Its opinion: "Innovative, roomy two-person tent for year-round trekking and mountain excursions".

Y-STYLE ATTAC fixed-rope route set receives "Alpin-Tipp" award

A comprehensive review of fixed-rope route sets by German magazine Alpin/Das Bergwelt has concluded that SALEWA’s set is the best. All the sets were tried out by a number of different individuals; the given weights refer to the actual weights recorded. Laboratory testing was carried out in the materials testing institute of the University of Stuttgart, one of the few institutes also permitted to license fixed-rope route sets and which has calibrated equipment for replicating falls. The testers’ verdict: the good laboratory test results are heartening, and the SALEWA Attac Y is the undoubted test winner. The SALEWA set was a hit both in terms of test values (a very good impact force of 4.8 kN) and handling. In addition it is one of the lightest sets reviewed - the result of SALEWA’s intense efforts in this area over the past few years.

Allure Softshell jacket on trial

In its test of 15 Softshell jackets, Swiss magazine “outdoor guide”’s verdict on SALEWA’s Allure Lady jacket made out of Polartec Power Shield was very positive: “The wide fabricated and extremely stretchable materials ensure a perfect fit. As a result, the jacket insulates well, even though the fleece employed is thin. It offers absolute protection against wind, with the hood, in particular, being especially windproof. The highly breathable design ensures optimal freedom of movement, and when packed, the jacket takes up little space. A good choice for all those looking for a lightweight jacket with a small packing size.”

Sierra Leone Ultra tent stands out

In its April edition the German outdoor pursuits magazine “Outdoor” tested various lightweight trekking tents and awarded the SALEWA Sierra Leone Ultra its “Kauf-Tipp” (“Buy Tip”). The testers’ verdict: Outstanding! They go on: “What has happened to the Sierra Leone? The test team looks on in astonishment at Salewa’s classic design in its new look. And the new look certainly has a lot going for it: The inside of the tent is friendly and bright with enough space for two people. Also included are two canopies which can be opened out wide and which are large enough to store trekking rucksacks. The tent also features closable vents and a tight-fitting outer tent. Despite all of this, the total weight of the Sierra Leone Ultra is only 2.9 kilos! And in front of the wind machine? It remains firmly in place, with only four storm lines holding it down. Only the canopies shift a little. Verdict: a light and spacious trekking tent that offers a great deal of comfort and high wind resistance.”

Adar Fleece very good

“bildung + reisen” magazine has assessed the Adar fleece jacket as “VERY GOOD”: “SALEWA is an expert when it comes to well-cut jackets, i.e. close-fitting but not too tight. Stretch inserts at the sides ensure comfortable freedom of movement, and rock climbers will find that the cuffs don’t ride up when looking for the next hold. The inclusion of waist and collar cords also mean that the jacket can easily be sealed, and our compliments on the colour: rarely does one come across such a warm and soothing red.”
Sceptre glove is awarded the “Bergsteiger” tip

Having carefully examined and thoroughly tested 15 thin gloves, the product specialists at Germany’s “Bergsteiger” magazine have awarded SALEWA’s Sceptre Softshell glove the coveted “Bergsteiger Tipp” award. The product testers were particularly impressed by the fact that the Sceptre adapts itself to match the shape of the hand and is therefore especially comfortable. Their verdict: “An all-round winter glove that is both robust and successful in every respect.” Bergsteiger also recommends the SALEWA Sceptre as an all-round winter glove and for ice tours in summer. Prior to this, the Sceptre glove had already come out tops in the March edition of “Alpin”. The glove was given a “thumbs up” overall assessment and was the only one of the 20 gloves tested to be described as “very good” in terms of grip. The testers’ verdict: “A very warm Softshell glove with a strong grip feeling. Highly water-resistant. A very good ski touring glove for cold days. Light!”

Leading climbing equipment supplier

The major climbing equipment test in the German magazine "bergsteiger" proves it: SALEWA is a leader in this ever more popular sport.
The test included two SALEWA climbing sets, two helmets and three combi-harnesses. The SALEWA Helium was given the distinction of being "one of the best helmets on the market, to be recommended unreservedly", and the new Krypton convinced the editorial team: "even lighter than the Helium, a perfect helmet with no weaknesses." The Easy Fit climbing harness was described as "unbeatable weight, for pros and advanced climbers", the Rock as "extremely good all-round harness" and the Civetta as "extremely good cost-effectiveness ratio".
The two climbing sets were outstanding, and the U-style Attac set was given the distinction of being "Bersteiger Tip Top” – best climbing set in the test. The Classic-Y style Attac set was assessed as "the Original with the best safety carabiner". The authors also said, "The SALEWA Attac carabiner has without doubt the best (ingenious and reliable) lock construction for climbers. The carabiner is always automatically locked, as soon as it is released. Some producers are now copying the SALEWA carabiner, but for its manufacture and finish (and at the same time its reduced weight) the Original appears to be superior to any copy."

SALEWA Sceptre gloves on test
For its March issue, the German mountain sport magazine "Alpin" tested 20 gloves. Included in these functional tests was the Softshell glove SALEWA Sceptre. In the overall classification, the glove was given a “thumbs up”, and in the assessment of grip and feel it was the only one of the 20 gloves on test to achieve the distinction “very good”. The conclusion reached by the testers: "Really warm Softshell glove with great grip. Extremely water-repellent. Extremely good ski touring glove for cold days. Light!"
SALEWA stands for the best tents and sleeping bags – according to the results of a representative survey amongst the readers of the members’ magazine DAV Panorama of the Deutscher Alpenverein (German Alpine club). The study, which was jointly carried out by the Alpine club and Atlas Verlag, was drawn up by facit market research institute in Munich. In the category "Best Sleeping Bags", SALEWA was number 1 ahead of manufacturers Ajungilak and Vaude. In the tents category, readers favoured SALEWA over Vaude and The North Face. Both first positions were presented with the "Panorama Award", which was awarded to a total of six product categories (two of which for shoes).
According to the survey, SALEWA is also one of the top with regard to name recognition and ownership of outdoor brands. 91 percent of those questioned know the traditional manufacturer. SALEWA is leading among full-range suppliers. 59 percent own SALEWA products, which indicates its clear leading position among outdoor brands.

Salewa products on trial
During the past two months numerous Salewa products have been awarded top marks by trade journalists from the well-known magazines Bergsteiger and Outdoor. The Dolomite DRL outdoor pants were rated top in a comparison involving 16 other products carried out by Bergsteiger, and as result were awarded the coveted “Bergsteiger-Tipp” [Bergsteiger Tip] in the April edition. The German magazine Outdoor tested ten tents and rated the Salewa XPD Base “outstanding” for value-for money and “good” in relation to functionality. The Salewa Scorpio 2 was rated “very good” and named the editors’ “Kauftipp” [Purchase Tip]. Three rucksacks were also tested by Outdoor. The Salewa Cumbra 38, the Cumbra 75 and the Salewa Summit 30 were rated “very good”.
SALEWA Ipsos gets «Alpin-Tipp»
The German magazine Alpin in its June edition tested thirteen all-round climbing harnesses meant to satisfy the needs of both climbers and those undertaking high-altitude mountain tours. The Salewa Ipsos was one of only two climbing harnesses found to be completely satisfactory and to be awarded the coveted “Alpin-Tipp” [Alpin Tip]. The editors declared themselves to be impressed by its technical aspects and wrote: “A harness that functions very well with a number of good features. Easy to centre and very light.”

Salewa test winner on Swiss television!
The critical consumer programme "Kassensturz" [Cashing Up], broadcast by the Swiss television station Schweizer Fernsehen DRS, had 13 different items of fleece clothing tested to destruction. The gratifying result: The Salewa “Cape” fleece pullover, produced from Polarlite Classic was the outstanding winner.

Markus Weder, internationally renowned textile specialist at the Eidgenössischen Materialprüfungs- und Forschungsanstalt EMPA [Swiss Material Testing and Research Institute], carried out the tests on the instructions of the makers of “Kassensturz”. This involved washing the various products ten times and then measuring the so-called resistance to heat loss, and in an optical test assessing the susceptibility of the fibres to knotting. In both tests the Salewa "Cape" pullover came out top. The benefit to customers: even after several washes, Salewa fleece products made of Polarlite constantly register high insulation values, looking as good as new for much longer.
SALEWA Diadem Ultra
The magazine OUTDOOR tested our "Salewa Diadem Ultra". Read about the results:
Lightly packed Salewa Diadem Ultra

550 grammes is hardly any weight at all for a sleeping bag. The Salewa Diadem Ultra demonstrates that such a model can also keep you warm. 250 grammes of down are hidden – distributed in H-chambers – beneath fine Pertex Quantum (20-d nylon) and ensure impressive loft, which promises warm nights. Its promise is kept for temperatures of at least five degrees plus. The down is not the only factor responsible for this: This is also due to the body-shaped fit, which only allows the upper body little room, whilst the legs have more, and to the very well-fitting hood. Furthermore, a narrow, tightly filled covering strip on the half-length side zipper prevents a loss of warmth. Instead of a proper warm neck opening, the light sleeping bag only has a reduced form: internally placed adjustable bands at shoulder height. Upon being pulled, they prevent the exchange of air from inside (warm) with outside (cold) – ideal for those who don’t like to wear a hood.

And the durability? 30 days of outdoors living left the material unscathed. Even uncut toe nails and rough dogs’ paws didn’t make an impression on the thick down material.

The Salewa is a fine sleeping bag for people who aren’t too tall (up to 180 cm) and for those tours that aren’t too cold.
